Spirals

Entrance Stone @ Newgrange, Ireland 2009

am thinking of my time at Newgrange today. I find myself wanting to feel the coolness of the stones under my fingertips again, feeling the stone walls on either side of me as I traced the rocks as we descended into the main chamber. Standing in the center of the chamber taking in every detail…..The ancient spirals on the walls, to the 4 diamond shaped symbols on the rock above the to wondering what the small indentations were used for on the large smooth rock in the right small chamber….is this were they burned their herbs to honor the ashes of the dead?

Newgrange was a very powerful experience, to stand within something that was created over 5,000 years ago, as well as predating the Egyptian Pyramids! The feeling of familiarity that surrounded me as I stood in the center of the passage tomb. The need or want to be alone, to sing in my ancestors, to sit and “see” what life must have been like.

To envision the Winter solstice sunrise as the first rays of light penetrate the inner chamber, the wonder that must have filled those who waited in the dark for the light to return, and in that return knowing that their loved ones had made the journey to the underworld. If the walls could talk……can you imagine?

Blessed Be!
